Somethin’ Bloodied, Somethin’ Blue

The wedding of Etar and Thalleia

Ah… weddings.

That special moment that two folks come together with family and/or friends to solidify their devotion and love for each other. For better of worse, til death (or related condition) do they part…

[insert record screech here]

Wait wait… You may be asking yourself:

“Why is he writing about this?”

Oh… Simple!

In many mmorpgs, folks can and do get “hitched”. Amazingly, this is not confined to RP servers. I’ve been in and helped with some weddings on PvE servers as well. These marriages range strictly from a RP standpoint (platonic) to real life couples having an symbolic wedding online. Just like in everyday life, these ceremonies can be as diverse and detailed as the couples wish to make it.

Oddly, they can also have the similar stress levels - making sure everything is alright, folks are gathered, the caterers (yeah, some have catered food!) and making sure all goes well.

“Shaw” just attended one “quickie” wedding and a “mating ritual” (Orcish wedding) less than a week from each other. On PvE servers I’ve been in and helped with ingame weddings as well. So, I thought writing about this would be helpful for others wanting the tie the knot ICly.

This can be quite a chore for a couple, so here’s some ideas, observations and tips to help!

Say No To Cookie Cutter Heroes

Shaw Ashecroft... ranger?

In any game system you have game mechanics structured around classes and roles. Mages toss spells, warriors whack folks and clerics heal. You know the drill. While in some forms of play, playing and knowing your “class” is paramount to everything, even role-play.

But from the role-playing side of things, there’s a whole world of twists and different takes on what “X” class is or could be. In tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, you can “flavor” your character with Character “Kits”. What this does is take you away a little from the generics of a class and liven up things.

In mmorpgs, this can work as well!

With a little creativity you can step away and create a cool concept and still play your class “role”. While there’s nothing “wrong” with playing a class as it is, your can still do it with some flair or tweak a few things and make it something different - and fun.

I know also ALOT of buzz is coming from the addition of the Death Knight Hero class in the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It opens alot for folks to play something different.

I like to think about this way:
Why not make your own “Hero” class? *grin*

The Little Things Can Be Magic

Theatrical Properties or “props” are a staple in most theatre productions and movies. It’s the things that can jump out ya as cool gadgets and objects like a sci-fi blaster to as mundane as a cute little coffee mug. Just like costuming, it helps solidify the surroundings and immerses the audience into the scene - making a little “magic” happen.

The cool thing is that we come across these all the time in everyday life and sometimes maybe, just maybe - you’ll come across these in game…

Here’s a great example of something mundane, but can help create a little “magic”. In World of Warcraft mmorpg, where the world of Azeroth exists, there is a lonely lighthouse off the coast of Westfall. The ghost of Captain Grayson still watches over the lighthouse and has a grudge against the murlocs that attacked the it some time ago. You can learn about his tale during his quests.

This is where it gets cool…
